Windows won't boot after disk copy
Searching “Windows won’t boot after disk copy” on the internet, you may find lots of users who are suffering the same problem, for example:
I cloned the OS hard drive to a 2TB new drive using a drive clone software, but Windows on the new disk is unbootable even if I have set it as the first boot device.
But unfortunately, most of them haven’t found an effective solution. Considering this situation, we give the following solutions, some of which may help solve your problem.
Try Following Solutions If Windows Won’t Boot After Disk Copy
1.Enter BIOS to set the source disk as the first boot device if it is still connected, then boot Windows from the source disk, and open Disk Management to see whether the system partition (the partition saving Windows boot files) on the target disk is set active. If not, set it active via the “Set Active” function in right-click menu. Then, shut down computer, restart it and enter BIOS to set the target disk as the first boot device. If not having active partition is the issue, setting system partition active would make Windows bootable. However, if the system partition on target disk is already active and Windows is still unbootable, you may need to try the second solution.
Tip: you can also use MiniTool Partition Wizard Bootable CD to set the partition active. For more information about this bootable partition manager, please see MiniTool Partition Wizard Bootable.
2.Download MiniTool Partition Wizard Bootable CD, burn it to CD, DVD, or USB flash drive, then boot computer via the bootable disc, and rebuild MBR of the target disk. Nevertheless, if this solution fails to work, users need to fix or repair system.
3.If you have an installation disc, boot computer via the disc, and choose Repair your computer rather than Install Now.
Then, choose Startup Repair. This will fix your startup problems automatically.
Actually, you can also choose Command Prompt to do the repair: just type the following commands in Diskpart:
Bootrec.exe /fixmbr
Bootrec.exe /fixboot
Bootrec.exe /rebuildBCD
Here, we just introduce these 3 solutions and hope one of them at least is useful when your Windows OS also won’t boot after disk copy. In addition, if you are interested in the partitioning software MiniTool Partition Wizard, please see partition magic software.
