Can I install Windows 10 with Windows 7 license
Microsoft allows Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 users to upgrade to Windows 10 for free within one year, but lots of people would like to do clean installation rather than upgrade since they fear that bugs from previous Windows port over to Windows 10. Then, a question comes: can we clean install Windows 10 by using Windows 7 or Windows 8.1 license?
The answer is definitely No (I have tested it for several times), and we guess it is because one Windows license can only be registered from within a fully installed Windows environment by using a valid Internet connection. Therefore, users have to upgrade to Windows 10 at first so as to register their device to have a valid free Windows 10 license. After that, they can make clean install as many times as they wan. However, if users make major hardware changes (replace the motherboard, for example), license will be required during clean installation.
Then, we are going to show users 2 tips on upgrading to Windows 10:
1.Backup all important files saved in the partition which installs Windows 7 or Windows 8.1, in case of upgrade failure.
2.Extend system reserved partition or check file system of this partition to fix errors, if Windows 10 upgrade can’t update the system reserved partition. For detailed steps, please see our previous post.
Once the upgrade is completed, you can clean install Windows 10 via CD, DVD, or USB flash drive. And next, we will introduce a partitioning tool to help users better manage disks and partitions in Windows 10.
MiniTool Partition Wizard is a piece of free partitioning software perfectly compatible with Windows 10, with which you can complete different types of partition management operations, like extend partition, shrink partition, recover lost partition, set partition active/inactive, convert file system from NTFS to FAT32 or FAT32 to NTFS, and set partition as logical/primary.
