Transfer Windows 7 to new disk
When the disk coming with computer is running in low disk space, many users would like to purchase a new hard disk and then transfer Windows to the new drive, if they do not want to make reinstallation. Here, we take migrating Windows 7 for example to show users detailed steps.
Step 1: Prepare a Piece of System Migration Software
Since Windows itself does not provide programs to migrate system, users need to download a third party system migration software from the internet. Here we suggest using MiniTool Partition Wizard Free Edition since this program can help transfer Windows 7 to new disk without users costing any money. However, if you are running a server operating system, Partition Wizard Server Edition is required. After successful installation, we can run this program to start migration.
Step 2: Migrate Windows 7 by Following Given Instructions
Launch the system migration software and we can see its main interface shown below:
To start transferring, please choose the function “Migrate OS to SSD/HD Wizard” from the left action panel to get the following interface:
Now, just select the new disk and click “Next” to continue.
Here, we are able to edit partition size by changing the length of partition handle and edit partition location by changing the position of the partition handle for the new disk. Then, click “Next” to get a boot note.
Tip: transferring Windows 7 to new disk will migrate both system partition and boot partition of Windows 7 (sometimes they are in one partition) to the new hard disk, and MiniTool Partition Wizard gives chance to edit these 2 partitions.
If you are running Windows 7 on an MBR disk, please set boot priority in BIOS as the note tells when the computer is booting. If you are running Windows 7 on GPT disk, ignore this note and click “Finish” to go back to the main interface:
At this time, as long as we click “Apply” button, all changes will be performed automatically. Note: migrating system requires restart, which is to protect system. Please restart your computer as MiniTool Partition Wizard prompts.
Once all changes are made, our computer will reboot. Please enter BIOS before Windows is loaded and then set the new disk as the default boot disk. And then we can say to transfer Windows 7 to new disk is finished. If you also want to migrate Windows to new HDD or SSD, try this way.
