C drive is in low disk space
Question: I have a 500GB hard disk with Windows 7 Ultimate installed on C drive, and now C drive is running in low disk space (2GB free space left). Is there any suggestion to help me get rid of the trouble?
This is a frequently asked question on the internet, and users are always given 3 solutions:
- Delete useless files from C drive to free up space.
- Purchase a new disk and then reinstall Windows on new disk or transfer Windows to the new disk.
- Extend C drive.
Actually, we do not recommend the first solution unless there are a great number of useless files. The second way is recommended when the old disk does not have much free space available. And the third solution is worth trying if there is much unused space left on the old disk. Next, let’s see details of the latter 2 solutions, for it is very easy to delete a file.
Reinstall Windows or Transfer Windows to New Disk
Reinstall Windows on New Disk: prepare Windows installation disc, which could be CD/DVD or USB flash drive, then set CD-Driver or Removable device as the first boot device (for Legacy BIOS), next boot computer via the installation disc, and install Windows to the new disk in accordance with given instructions. During this process, we are able to specify much more space for the new boot or system partition.
Transfer Windows to New Disk: this helps avoid reinstalling Windows, and you can use a free partitioning tool to complete the operation. Here, we take MiniTool Partition Wizard for example. It helps migrate Windows OS from one disk to another disk with requiring a product key, and during the migration process users are able to edit partition size and location. For more information, please see Migrate OS to SSD/HD.
Extend C Drive
Firstly, you can try doing this operation in Windows Disk Management: right click Computer icon on desktop, choose Manage, select Disk Management, and right click C drive to see whether the Extend Volume feature is available. If it can be chosen, just extend C drive by following instructions. If the option is grayed out, a third party program is needed. Steps are as follows:
Step 1: start and launch MiniTool Partition Wizard Free to get its main interface:
Step 2: select C drive and choose “Extend Partition” feature from the left side.
Step 3: select an unallocated space or existing partition on the same disk to take free space to enlarge C drive, and then drag sliding button to decide how much free space to take. Next, click “OK” to go back to the main interface.
Step 4: click “Apply”, “Yes” and “Restart Now” (if required) successively to make all changes performed finally.
These are all ways we introduced to help users deal with C drive low disk space issue. Just choose the most appropriate one by considering your actual situations.
