Can’t extend C drive
When installing Windows 7, I've divided my HD to several partitions, but unfortunately I gave only 50 GB to drive C. Now it has several GB unused space left. I would like to extend it but the Extend option is in gray. And my partition status is attached:
Is there anything I can do in order to achieve the goal?
Under this situation, users definitely can’t extend C drive by using Windows disk management, because this tool does not allow users to extend a primary partition to space located in extended partition (unpartitioned space in extended partition is called free space while space in primary partition is called unallocated space). Next, let’s get to know something about primary partition and extended partition.
Primary Partition and Extended Partition
We can initialize a brand new hard disk to either MBR or GPT. On an MBR disk, we can create 4 primary partitions at most since MBR-style partition table only offers 4 partition entries. In order to create more than 4 partitions, Microsoft introduces extended partition where lots of logical partitions can be created. Primary partition and extended partition have their own area, and Disk Management does not allow primary partition to use space in extended partition, and logical partition cannot use space in primary partition.
Well then, how can we extend C drive to free space? Here is a solution.
Extend C Drive with MiniTool Partition Wizard
MiniTool Partition Wizard is a piece of professional partitioning software that can break limitations in Windows Disk Management. To be specific, it allows users to extend a primary partition to any space on the same hard disk no matter it is located in primary partition area or extended partition area. Detailed steps are as follows:
1.Start the program to get its main interface:
2.Select C drive and choose “Extend Partition” function from the left action panel.
3.Select an existing partition or unallocated space to take free space to enlarge C drive, and drag sliding button to decide how much space to take. Here, we take free space from unallocated space. Tip: MiniTool Partition Wizard does not distinguish free space from unallocated space so that it is able to extend a primary partition to space located in extended partition.
4.Click “Apply” and “Restart Now” to apply all changes in boot mode.
After all changes are made, our computer will reboot. If you also can’t extend C drive in Windows, just try this way.
