Merge 2 hard drive partitions in Windows 7
You might create multiple partitions on the hard disk during Windows installation (three or more), but now you want to combine two of them to enlarge one. Well, how can users merge 2 hard drive partitions without losing data in Windows 7?
Generally, users will be suggested to backup all important data, and then delete related partitions to recreate, but undoubtedly this is much troublesome and time-wasting. In this post, we will show users appropriate methods by considering corresponding situations.
Merge 2 Hard Drives When They are Neighboring
It can be easy to complete the task under this situation, because users do not need to delete any partition. Please do as the following demonstration shows.
Firstly, please download a partitioning program from the internet. If users do not know which program is available, just try using MiniTool Partition Wizard Professional, which is competent enough for doing most partitioning operations, like extend partition, merge partition, copy partition, and convert partition file system.
Then, start and launch the program to get its main interface where properties for every partition are shown clearly:
Here, we take merging partition D and partition E for example. Please select the partition which should be expanded and choose “Merge Partition” from the left action panel.
Tip: both partitions should be formatted with NTFS. If one of them is FAT formatted, please convert it to NTFS via the function Convert FAT to NTFS.
Then, click “Next” to continue.
Next, select the partition that will be included to the previously selected partition and click “Finish” to go back to the main interface. Note: all data saved in this partition will be transferred to the previously selected partition completely and safely, so users do not need to have any worry.
At last, click “Apply” button and MiniTool Partition Wizard Professional will do all changes automatically.
After this step, to merge 2 neighboring hard drive partitions in Windows 7 is completed successfully without any data loss. However, if the 2 partitions you want to combine are non-adjacent, users may have to delete the partition that blocks them, and backing up data should be the first step. If you want to get a fast but safe way to backup data, just try cloning the entire partition with partitioning program. Compared with copying data directly, this will save your much time and brings no damage to data. For detailed steps, please see Copy Partition.
